On May 1rst, an assembly including all the MUN organs joined together in order to meet the candidates for General Secretary for the 9th Model United Nations. In this article we plan to share the questions asked by our own Press Corps. These Candidates are Chloe of Saddleback, Tiffany of Downey, and Akisha of Sacramento.
Question 1
Press Corps: When you become Secretary General what are the issues you are going to highlight for your program priority for the ninth Model United Nations?
Chloe: “I would try to stop AIDS and Poverty.”
Tiffany: “ I would help with the Economic Crisis and the issue with the War on Afghanistan.”
Akisha: “I would try and help with People in Army Conflict.”
When we asked this question, the responses were varied in many ways, but all the candidates seemed to be truly concerns on their respective topics. As to be expected, the candidate’s answers included conflicts that are currently being decided on this weekend. Hopefully, they will be able to follow up on these topics.
Question 2
Press Corps: What steps would you take to resolve poverty and how would you lead your high commissioner in that?
Chloe: “Discuss making people donate money towards a cause.”
Tiffany: “MUN can enlist poor people so forests are staying alive so those working on it are having an income.”
Akisha: “Give money to unstable countries.”
This question was a little bit more controversial. This is partially because of the brief time they had to think about the question but also because of some of the answers contradicted themselves. If the world is in poverty where would the money come from? And better yet, can you really force people into doing things? We hope that which ever candidate becomes the Secretary-General will take time before the conference to organize her thoughts.
Question 3
Press Corps: What would you look for when choosing a Deputy Secretary General or High Commissioner?
Tiffany: “Characteristics would be being responsible, decisive, and someone who would help out.”
Chloe: “They would need to be reliable, responsible, and good at communication.”
Akisha: “A knowledgeable, trustable, and reliable person.”
This question seemed important to us. This is because it didn’t only talk about what they would do, but the type of person they would do these things with. Leadership is the foundation of a good ambassador here at MUN.
In the end, the assembly seemed to be a success. From all of us here at Press Corp we cheer on all the candidates and wish them good luck.
